When I just want to get away from it all, when I want to spend some time with God, when I have a lot on my mind, or just want to wonder … there is no place better than a walk on the beach.

Growing up on Long Island, I loved going to fire island with my family during the summer. I would jump and ride the waves with my brothers, build sandcastles with my dad, and barbecue hamburgers with my mom … it was home, fun, and refreshing on a hot summer day.

Living on the Gulf Coast in Texas, I would plan days to get away and walk on the beach all by myself in Galveston or the Bolivar peninsula. I’ve seen the beach change quite a bit after the hurricanes, particularly Ike in 2008, but God always renews the beach. In the midst of great change, the beach is both steady and dynamic.

Now I’m living in New Jersey … and the shore is still where I find myself on my retreat days. This blog is an invitation to join the walk with me … when time stops and the wind blows, when the birds caw and the fish jump … this is what’s on our minds, this is what we talk about. This is where I am confident we will meet God.
